I had lot of expectations on the session, with lot of enthusiasm I got up at 7.00 am and drove to the RV Dental college premises.

For the first few hours, I was impressed with Mr. Ram Kumar about the infrastructure evolution that’s going on in the industry. It was really information until the presentation team started pulling him out. I wouldn't have minded, if I had to sit one hour late @ the end of the day to cover up what he wanted to say. Bechara, he had to leave the session in between. I am sure; he wouldn't have got himself convinced with the kind of half-baked session he gave.

Coming next to Windows session by Vijay and Vic. I would say these guys enjoyed the presentation themselves more than anybody else. They knew what they were talking, they had worked on it and they knew how to convince the crowd of around 600 people. They were onto perfection in what they were saying. They key what the crowd was looking for. They picked the best examples what a developer would look for. Live demos, live examples make developers happy, as they want to try and see these things.

Next was Chaitra, the lady was well prepared. Now is when I started feeling sleepy. The session would have worked, if I was on any Microsoft webcast, but not in this kind of place. I felt that she was reading some ppt presentation. I personally felt that she has to learn a lot on presentation skills. Teaching is an art and not book reading.

A coffee break.... I got the relief, I came out of the sleep and had a cup of coffee and a cig, went back onto the auditorium on time.

Mr. Kashi started off with generic concepts and started going into Biztalk. I recalled back, what he said on the first set of slides. This is not about biztalk (something like that) and he went on and on into biztalk. @ One point I was recalling one of the old times when there was no synchronization with audio and video and this was a classical example for that.

I felt that’s it, let me go back home and sleep. I was hungry and could not wait any longer. I got up by 12.45 and drove back home.

Summary: I am not saying some were good and some were bad. The overall objective I personally felt was not met by B.Net team. Yes, Organizing and making people sit for 2 days and giving some goodies is not what B.Net should aim for. The vision and mission has to be relooked @ what should be done.

I don’t blame the organizers; they always would like to get the best people. But unfortunately there is a limitation under which they have to work.

Yes, we always follow what is being done than how best or how different it can be done.

It’s time for revival.

Defining Responsibility

Today, When I was having a team meeting, one of my boys asked me to define the responsibility. Being in the industry for 8 years, I was not able to convience him with what I defined.

So, I started looking out for the definition on google, read some 50-60 links on the results it provided. Then I got few links which gave nice explination of what it meant.

Here is what I found

Definition by meaning
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/responsibility

Layman’s meaning
http://www.eruptingmind.com/what-is-responsibility/

Complicated meaning
http://defineresponsibility.com/

All the above talk about the same thing in different words, different perceptions and in different ways.

The bottom line is very simple “It is what you do and how you move with success”

Set Path for Command-Line Tools for SharePoint Developers

Learn about a Visual Studio .NET shortcut that opens the command line window, runs a batch file, then remains open for further use.

I do a lot of development for MOSS 2007 and always find myself in the command-line tool doing a lot of change directories to get to stsadm.exe and gacutil.exe. Visual Studio .NET installs a command prompt shortcut called Visual Studio .NET 2003/2005 Command Prompt. This shortcut opens the command line processor, runs a batch file, then remains open for further use.
The Visual Studio team built a .BAT file that includes file directories for the most commonly referenced paths Visual Studio developers use. For example, if you open the command prompt using the Visual Studio .NET 2003/2005 Command Prompt shortcut, you can simply type in "gacutil" with the appropriate parameters without having to specify the path to the executable.
To apply this same option to WSS tools, such as stsadm.exe, I modified the .BAT file to include two paths I use frequently. You can include other paths as needed.

To locate the vsvars32.bat file by viewing the properties of the Visual Studio .NET 2003/2005 Command Prompt shortcut, modify the vsvars32.bat file by adding the following lines at the beginning of the file:

@SET SPBINDIR=C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\60\BIN
@SET SPTOOLSDIR=C:\Program Files\SharePoint Portal Server\Bin
Next locate the line starting with "@set PATH=" and insert "%SPBINDIR%;%SPTOOLSDIR%;,

so the line looks like:

@set PATH=%SPBINDIR%;%SPTOOLSDIR%;%DevEnvDir%;…

Save vsvars32.bat. The next time you use the command line, the Visual Studio .NET 2003/2005 Command Prompt will have the path properly set for Visual Studio and SharePoint development.

Thanks and Have a great holiday everyone

I would like to wish you all a Happy Christmas and a great New Year.
